About Me
I am a registered counsellor, teacher, and mum. I bring to my practice more than twenty years experience as a creative arts practitioner and educator working with children, young people, and adults, along with skills and expertise in drama, environmental education, mindfulness in education and yoga for children. As a neurotypical parent with neurodivergent family members, I am passionate about supporting neurodivergent people and those who support them, and I bring this commitment to my work as a student counsellor and teacher in a non-mainstream high school. My priority, always, is to create a safe environment that will enable connection and creative collaboration. My commitment is to listen deeply and bring curiosity and non-judgement to all our conversations. There’s only one brain like yours and you are the expert on it!
I have created several wellbeing programs for schools that inspire curiosity, creativity and self-discovery, and affect sustainable change, including "Up the Creek... & Down the Drain" (Healthy Waterways), "Following the Figs" (Ipswich City Council), “Journey to the Island of Calm” (Pathways to Resilience) and "Meet Your Brain!" (Pathways to Resilience).
My Story
After graduating from a degree in Drama and freelancing as a director, composer, performer and musician, a determination to pursue a career in musical theatre led me to the UK. This is where I discovered children’s theatre and first experienced the joy of working with young people.
Back in Australia, I decided to return to university and study education so that I could continue exploring ways to teach children about and through The Arts. I spent many years working as a drama teacher and as a teacher/artist at an environmental education centre. These experiences were formative in the development of a personal framework of practice that has continued to prioritise connecting through story, play, creative collaboration, curiosity, deep listening and reflection. I also began to develop a broader interest in children’s wellbeing and the daily tools that might be available to them.
After studying mindfulness in education and becoming a certified children’s yoga teacher, I temporarily stepped out of education to become a wellbeing consultant and grow my knowledge on topics such as neuroscience, emotions and positive psychology. In this role, I was particularly interested in how educators might grow their own self-awareness and, in doing so, enable each of their students to develop an understanding and appreciation of the unique way their brain functions. It was my hope that this might assist in cultivating calm, connected classrooms. The desire to work with young people and those supporting them in a deeper, more personal way led me to study a Masters of Counselling. I now run a small private practice alongside my work as a student counsellor and teacher.
When I’m not working, I love to read, watch movies, play board games, walk in nature, and spend time with my family, including our two gorgeous Burmese cats.
